Turning 20 again

I'm well on my way to my goal of making each of the kids a quilt for Christmas. This is Ashton's quilt top. The pattern is Turning Twenty...Again, designed by Tricia Cribbs.
This is a very easy quilt. It is made up of 20 fat quarters, and best of all, there is no need to worry about matching seams.
What do you think of the color choices? Not something I would normally pick, but all in all I love the combination.
All of the fabric choices were based around this fabric: Michael Miller's Zoology print. This is the one print Ashton chose because he loves animals so much. I went with black and white, oranges and lime green. I pulled in the turquoise and went from there. I was able to snag quite a few selections from my stash, probably about half. The zoology print will be the back of the quilt, and I think I'm going to choose one of the turquoise prints for the binding. I'm not going to do any sort of border.
I'm sending this off to a local quilter to be quilted (as I am still working on binding Ava's;)
Of course I will be sure to show you the finished product!
I hope you're having a terrific Tuesday!

Make Some Art Monday (Week 3)

Happy Monday! Did you make any art this week?
Last week we talked about being inspired by your favorite artist. I have to tell, I am kind of cheating this week. I didn't finish the project I started, so I am showing you something from my archives. This is a mosaic I made for one of my books, and it is inspired by Frida.I have a lot of favorite artists, but Frida is definitely one of my top 5 of all time.
I made this piece using all handmade ceramic pieces. I rolled out clay, cut all the pieces out, fired them in my kiln, glazed them and fired them again, and then made a mosaic out of them all.
Were you inspired by any artists this week? Will you show us what you made?
Remember, show us something even if it doesn't pertain to the "theme". Did you paint something? Knit something? Quilt something? Doodle or draw...? We want to see it!
Don't forget...
1. Please link back to your original post, not your whole blog
2. Please link back to my blog post so people can come back here and look at other people's art too!
3. Try to visit each other and leave some comments!:)
And for next week?
I know y'all have seen these going around:
I think it originated here
She made a really cool one
and my new friend Beth jumped on the bandwagon.
Make some goals! They don't all have to be serious or time-consuming. Look at the ones listed above for some inspiration.
I told my Mom about the theme this week and she said, "But I'm turning 61 this year!" he he
I told her maybe to just start with 10:)
Okay, link up! I'm excited...:)

Jamie's Inspiration

This is my Mom's entry for this week's Make Some Art Monday.
I think it's really cool that she has been playing along!:)
"My favorite artist is my talented daughter Chrissie Grace! Yes, I got her permission to draw my own she said girl. It wasn't an easy assignment for me.(as you can see I'm not an artist!) I have had fun each week! Thank you Chrissie for the challenge each Monday. "

Are you interested in a Giveaway?:)

I've been in cahoots with a certain someone, and she is giving away one of my projects on her world-famous blog! Amy from Mod Podge Rocks is funny and full of talent, and I am so pleased to be doing a give-away on her blog!
This is the project I made. It is mixed-media mosaic just in time for Thanksgiving, but I tried to keep it in a palette that would be compatible for other times of the year as well.

If you want to enter to win, head on over to Amy's blog and follow the directions. It's a lot of fun!:)
Have a blessed Sunday, and I will be back tomorrow for "Make Some Art Monday!"

Flashback Friday

I haven't done a Flashback Friday in a loooooooong time, so I thought I would share these pictures with you.

One night, during my senior year of high school, I came home early from being out with my friends and wanted to paint. I went out into the garage and grabbed a ladder and started painting on one of my bedroom walls. The next morning my parents came into my room and said, "Oh cool, you're painting your wall. I like it!"
At the time it didn't seem like such a big deal, but looking back now, they gave me a lot of artistic freedom. There is a lot of underlying support in that kind of attitude. I have never been afraid to try new things in my art, and I think a lot of that has to do with times like that.
Anyway...here it is, circa 1992-1993?This is the only close-up I have. I must have worked on it off and on for a few months, but when I graduated and went away to college, my parents sold this house. They took these pictures before they moved out. I guess you could say I was really into quotes and color!:) I didn't finish it either. I wonder what the people who bought it thought! LOL It probably took a couple coats of KILZ to cover that mural up!
It's hard to believe that was 17 years ago!
Looking at it tonite, I pray that I will be able to always support my children's dreams and adventures in a special way.
Thanks for looking back with me.:)
Have a happy weekend.

Chrissie

Good Art

“Good art is not what it looks like, but what it does to us.”
-Roy Adzak
I've been cutting and snipping and snipping and gluing.

Lots and lots of tiny pieces of stained glass.
Two down, before grouting...They will be grouted black. They will be a 3D part of a pretty huge mirror.
Ava said, "Mama, take a picture of my painted nails...":)
This is the biggest flower...(don't know why blogger won't let me turn it the right way...?)
I love the close-ups. The iridescent glass is so pretty.
I love the juxtaposition of working with fabric one hour, and stained glass the next...
I love the quote at the top. It is so much about creating for me. The whole creative process, it is such a large part of who I am.

Chrissie

Red and Aqua

After this post, I learned from you guys that aqua is a lighter version of turquoise.
I love this color combo, and I made my deadline! This is my first online quilting bee, and after sending out 100 blocks, I will soon receive 100 back. I can't wait to see what they look, and assemble the quilt top.
After spending so much time on my machine, I have to say I can't believe people actually handstitch some quilts. It would probably take me two years to finish one!
This is the second quilt I'm making for Christmas presents. I actually almost finished another one today. I'll be back soon to show you...:)
Till then~
xoxo
