Sharing Stitches: Featured Artist: Sara Mincy

Hi everyone.
I am so excited that the release of my new book, Sharing Stitches, is coming soon. However, it is not really "my" book, because it is a compilation of many talented artists and sewers that made this book possible. Every week I'd like to introduce you to one of the participants who created at least one or two projects for the book.

This week I'd like to introduce you to Sara Mincy. At the time that the book came into conception, I had just fallen in love with Sara and her blog. She immediately struck me as someone I wanted to work with. Sara is a very talented artist, but at the time we started the book, she really wasn't that into sewing. Because the book has projects geared for first-time sewers as well as advanced sewers, Sara's style was a perfect match for the book!

Sara, tell us about your art. What kind of style do you consider it and what are your favorite mediums to work with?

I love to paint on canvas using acrylic paint. I call it modern folk art. I do a lot of quotes and verses.

What inspires you?

Going shopping! I love a great store display- I can go to Old Navy or Target or Pier 1 and get ideas for a painting just by seeing prints and patterns and colors. I also get a lot of inspiration from magazines. Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion is a huge inspiration to me and I have almost every issue that was put sad that she does not publish the magazine anymore!

How do you define "artistic success"?

When you get to do what you love and other people love it too! I know it is not necessary for other people to love your work to be qualified as an artist- but it is such an encouragement to me when people what to hang my art in their homes!

Did you enjoy art as a child? When did you learn how to sew?

I always enjoyed art- coloring, drawing, painting, sewing, etc. My mom taught me to sew when I was young- can't remember when we started. I made a quilt for a doll once. And I made 2 dresses for myself in high school.

Is there a part of the day that you enjoy creating the most? Tell us how a typical creative day may go for you.

I usually create in the afternoons when the kids are having a nap or quiet time. I can't create in the midst of chaos- so the kids have to be occupied! Evenings are good too. I love the quiet and solitude of going into my art room and putting on some music and painting or sewing or decoupaging.

Sara has such a fun style, not only with her art, but with her home decor, clothing, and everything she does! Thanks Sara!

I am so excited for your new book. Like a little kid at Christmas.

I love Sara's blog, too. She is so talented and I love all the color she incorporates in everything. I wish I could be so bold. Little by little, I am adding splashes of color.
